Tampa Bay’s Organic Coffee Company Has Become Fair Trade Certified

May 8, 2010 | Filled Under Food

Tampa Bay’s newest organic coffee company, Java Planet (http://www.java-planet.com), is now Fair Trade Certified. Fair trade coffee is coffee which is purchased directly from the growers for a higher price than standard coffee. The purpose of fair trade is to promote healthier working conditions and greater economic incentive for producers.

The company was started by a husband and wife team who wanted coffee that supports a healthy body, a healthy planet and that ensured that coffee growers are fairly compensated for their products. Now Java Planet is USDA certified organic, Fair Trade Certified and OIA certified.

Jennifer Simmons, owner of Java Planet states “We started Java Planet because we were coffee lovers. We also believe it is important to create a coffee experience that supports a healthy body, a healthy planet and that coffee growers are fairly compensated for their products. Now that we are Fair Trade Certified™ for many of our coffees, we are now closer to our goal.”

Tampa organic coffee lovers can find Java Planet at local markets, but for those who are not in the Tampa area, can visit their online store at http://store.java-planet.com.

I try to travel only with companies that practice fair trade in tourism, and from that experience I’ve discovered that Fair Trade Certification is no small accomplishment. Well done Tampa Bay Organic Coffee!
