How to Battle the Rising Biting Mite Epidemic

August 17, 2010 | Filled Under Health

You may have noticed itching, sneezing, or skin discoloration and thought that you were suffering from simple seasonal allergies. Unfortunately, there may be another, more discrete threat lurking right in your home’s ventilation system. The menace I am speaking of is the common household biting mite. These creatures are microscopic and they are literally everywhere. Don’t believe me? Look around your home. If you can see dust residue anywhere, then chances are that you may be harboring dust mites.

Don’t be unduly alarmed. Even though your home may contain dust mites there are a few pieces of information you should be aware of that can put your mind at rest. The first thing you must recognize is that there are two different kinds of mites: plant-hosted and animal-hosted. Plant-hosted mites do not bite humans while animal-hosted mites do. Animal-hosted dust mites are the type that can lead to skin irritation and itching. And even though plant-hosted mites don’t bite humans, their secretions can cause sneezing and other symptoms that resemble seasonal allergies.

Now that you know what biting mites do, how can you defend your home against them? After all, they are microscopic. The solution may be simpler than you think. My advice is to start small. If you notice skin irritation then you should treat your symptoms before tackling the larger project of eradicating all dust mites from your home. For example, if you notice excessive skin irritation, there are a wide variety of creams and baths you can use that can help you feel better and resist infection. There are scalp washes, similar to lice shampoo, which you can use to decrease itching and kill any mites that may be living in your hair, without doing damage to the environment.  There are many green medical solutions for biting mites available today. There are also soothing baths that can act as a balm for your irritated skin while at the same time eradicating any microscopic pests that lurk on your epidermis. If you need even more intense treatment, there are many natural medicinal gels you can place on your skin that will offer you soothing comfort. Your best bet is to use all of these green medical solutions in conjunction with one another, as they will offer the most complete healing and prevention.

Once you have tackled your specific symptoms, it is time to move on to eliminating these pests from your home. Your first line of defense should be a complete ventilation system cleaning. This will wipe out all pests living in your vents which will, in turn, significantly cut down on the number of dust mites in your home. After doing this it is up to you to keep your home as clean as possible. Constant cleaning will prevent the mites from propagating.  We prefer environmental friendly, green cleaning products.

Dust mites can be a devastating problem, causing severe discomfort and even pain. If you suffer from skin irritation and uncommon allergy symptoms, your home may be plagued by this rising epidemic. Follow the steps listed above and you will no doubt notice that your symptoms will slowly start to fade, leaving you and your family healthier and happier.
