{Earth Month Giveaway} Veggies, Herbs, Bamboo Oh My! CLOSED

April 19, 2010 | Filled Under Green Giveaways

Anyone who has ever eaten frozen or canned veggies has heard of Green Giant. Can a Green Giant really have a small footprint? They sure think so, and are continually discussing innovative ways to deliver the fresh nutritious vegetables while reducing packaging waste and minimizing greenhouse gas production. Over almost 70 years, the agricultural research team has made advances in greener farming practices with a focus on three areas: less land usage, less water usage, less pesticide usage. Learn more about the Green Giant Sustainability pledge!

Throughout its century-long history, Green Giant has worked to reduce its environmental footprint through many measures including:

  • Reducing the amount of land and water needed to grow vegetables
  • Packing vegetables in smaller, lighter cans, so it takes less fuel to deliver them to supermarket shelves
  • Utilizing traditional seed breeding methods over the last 35 years to double the amount of sweet corn grown on an acre of land
  • Teaming up with growers to install a more efficient irrigation system that can reduce water use by more than a million gallons a year;
  • Switching to more earth-friendly paperboard to package frozen vegetables, saving approximately 54,000 trees annually in the process.

Green Giant is now celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day by giving $200,000 to The Nature Conservancy to help fund an innovative project that will encourage greener farming practices to repair and protect a natural treasure — the Root River, one of Minnesota’s (home to Green Giant) best trout streams.

As part of their celebration, Green Giant is offering a Seeds of Change prize pack to help you start cooking healthier and growing your own mini-herb garden! This prize pack includes one VIP coupon valid for a free package of Green Giant frozen vegetables, a mini herb garden with seeds, an eco-friendly bamboo utensil set, and a 100% recyclable grocery tote.

My kids have enjoyed the mini herb garden kit. I had them do the planting (simple) and we have watched our new herb plants begin to sprout and grown in just a few days time! It’s a great way to get kids interested in gardening!

    We leave less of a carbon footprint by regularly recycling everything possible. We also use CFLs, Energy Star appliances, and reusable shopping bags. We combine driving trips to save mileage — and turn things like lights off when not in use. *Thanks* for the giveaway!

    We eat only organic & vegan food that we buy from local farmers markets (when they are open). We also dumpster dive so that less waste ends up in landfills. Get most of our clothing from thrift stores as well.
