Chicken Manure for Power – Renewable Electricity

October 30, 2008 | By GreenSt Vickie | Posted in Energy

There is a large biomass power plant in the Netherlands that is currently running on chicken manure. This power plant will deliver renewable electricity to 90,000 households. This biomass power plant has a capacity of 36.5 megawatts, and will generate more than 270 million kWh of electricity per year.

By utalizing chicken manure this power plant is helping offset CO2 and methane found in chicken manure if spread across farm land. By using the manure for power generation the release of methane is avoided.

It is estimated the biomass power plant will utilize approximately 440,000 tons of chicken manure. Since many European countries suffer under an excess of different types of animal manure that pollute the environmentm it will be great to put all that manure to work for renewable electricity.
