Can You Eat Well and Still Eat Out?

July 26, 2010 | Filled Under Food

Healthy Take Out FoodIf you are trying to improve your diet and eat natural and healthy foods, it may seem that you are destined to never set foot in a restaurant again.

Luckily, there are quite a few healthy tips that you can use to reduce your overall calories, eat foods that are good for you, and still dine out:

  • Read the menu beforehand. If you want to eat natural and healthy foods, you are going to have to do your homework before you go out to eat. This may involve researching all of the calories within your favorite dishes, or you may want to search for new restaurants that are using organic and whole-grain foods.
  • Drink more water. When you go out to eat a meal, make sure that you drink a complete glass of water before eating your meal. This will help to boost your digestion, and you will feel fuller so that you eat less overall. So simple!
  • Ask how the food is prepared. Your server should be more than happy to answer your questions, so ask what type of oil or butter that the dish is cooked in, whether or not any of the ingredients are organic, and what the healthiest choices may be on the menu.
  • Order off of the menu. In the case that you seriously can’t find any healthy foods at the restaurant that you are dining at, ask the chef to cook a side of vegetables for your entrĂ©e instead of full fat mashed potatoes or pasta.
  • Eat like the Europeans. Of course, this means eating whole and fresh foods that are much better for you, but it is also a good idea to have your largest meal at lunch time. This will help you to eat less calories overall at dinner so that you won’t be tempted to overeat when you go out.
  • Think about sauces. You have no idea how many calories butter or heavy sauces will add to your dish, so instead use salsa for a baked potato, have your salad dressing on the side, and always order a red sauce for pasta.

These simple tips will make a serious difference when dining out so that you can still enjoy going to a restaurant with family and friends without breaking your diet or health plan!
